I would really like to become proficient at using Base so that I can
start using it in applications. I got excited when it first came out
and got stuck into it straight away, but nothing worked! Well, that is
a bit of an exaggeration ... I was able to set up my tables, but after
that things seemed to go awry and I often did a lot of work only to lose
it all, somehow, or not get it to work. So, in the end, I had to make
better use of my time and do other things. Maybe I should have started
small with a few practice databases containing minimal data, instead of
trying to use Base to run my whole business. Then, at least, if it
didn't work my time commitment would have been modest.
you can avoid significant time waste just by using OOo Base as a front-end:
* design and create your database in a RDBMS like MySQL or PostgreSQL,
* use OOo Base to connect to the database, and integrate it into OOo
(mail merge, spreadsheet integration, etc)
* use OOo Base to manipulate the database, create reports, etc.
If you don't like OOo Base, just drop the third point, and use another
front-end (there are several and good ones for the two RDBMS I
mentioned). You can still keep the integration into OOo simply by
registering the database in OOo even if you don't use Base for
administration/reporting/etc.
If you are "trying to use Base to run my whole business", I'd recommend
not to create an embedded database (i.e. the data is stored inside an
OOo Base file), but to use a RDBMS like MySQL or PostgreSQL, and Base as
a front-end.
The same is valid if you are using MS Access: no serious person would
suggest you to create a MS Access database for any business use (unless
you don't care about data loss and corruption). Setting up MySQL or
PostgreSQL can be so simple...
