The log you put online shows that even asking for the data in the MySQL
console produces garbage, and here no OOo is invoked at all.

thank you for your reply of which I became aware only today.
The mysql client displays the data fine. It is only after I force it to
the wrong encoding in line 34 that it displays strange characters. I
included that part which looks similar to what OOo was displaying as a
hint of what I think may be going on in OOo behind the scenes.
I have solved the matter in a different way now. Thanks, everybody.
