If the screen is too small then maybe the sidebar would disappear until hovered over. Also, from the picture on OMGUbuntu! it doesn't look like it'd take up too much room in the first place. Take a look at some of the other pictures on the designer's blog - http://clickortap.wordpress.com/ - it really doesn't look like it would hurt anyone - even if you don't use LO in fullscreen mode.
