Click the Start Button on Windows 7.

Click the |> All Programs item at the bottom of the Start Menu.

Scroll through the folders to LibreOffice 3.4 and click to expand that folder.

Right click on the LibreOffice Writer entry.

Pick any of "Pin to Start Menu" and "Pin to Taskbar" that you desire. You can
also use Send> To Desktop and make icons.

Do the same for LibreOffice Calc.

Enjoy ...

Thanx to a list contributor who sent me a "private" memo, I now have icons on the desktop for the two (sections) of the program that I
wanted. It was actually a case of not seeing the forest for the trees!
When I found a FOLDER for LibreOffice and snapped on it, it produced
a whole list of the separate portions of LO, each of which having a
little icon next to it, and all I had to do was copy that to the desktop. WoilĂ !

Thanx to all who responded. --doug
