Binaries based on the open source need to become a community effort.

What really needs to be done is to make it rather less challenging to
build, and then the issue should largely go away.

We're fully aware of that and it actually took us a bit to make things build for us at Univa again (but on the face of it only a few days, really). But since this has been accomplished and works reliably now it is also not a focus area for us. There are just more important things for us to do right now.

We'll welcome improvements and are definitely willing to assist with advice but we can't dedicate more to effort to this right now.

All bugs we are fixing or infrastructure improvements we are making in
the open source core are being made public (see the regular put-backs
happening to the github repo since weeks). So the open source core is
getting into good shape.

I've made a number of changes that should improve the build process,
though I've only tried it on recent GNU/Linux systems and Solaris 10.
It's unfortunate that I can't contribute them, and some of the work has
been duplicated.

Is it because of the missing contributor agreement that you can't contribute them right now? This is something we should take off-line and address at the steering committee level then.

Or is there something else?

Cheers,

Fritz

However, I still haven't managed to build the GUI installer or the
Hadoop integration, though. (Chris D build the former, but I don't know
how. I couldn't sort out the IzPack stuff, which seemed to be missing
something from the source tree, but I know little about Java.) I'd be
interested in working recipes.
