What definition does Grid Engine use for the word "complex" as in the
phrase "complex configuration"?
Is it an adjective: "complicated configuration"? For a long time this
is the usage I had assumed and I've been wanting to start with "basic
configuration".
Is it a noun (as in "apartment complex"): "configuration of the Grid
Engine resource complex". I think this is the intended usage. Even
thinking about this a lot I still have a hard time wrapping my mind
around this meaning.
I also have always had problems with the usage of "queue" in Grid
Engine.
To me a queue would be a set of jobs waiting to run, usually with an
ordering (first come first serve, priority, random).
Grid Engine seems to apply 'queue' to a group of resources with a
common set of configuration/attributes.
I've been through a lot of the intro information many times and
'queue' doesn't work for me. The multiple teller bank queue example
doesn't work for me, except as an example of why multiple queues are
not optimal. Grid Engine appears to have a single ordered list of
jobs (a queue) and the scheduler tries to match up the first jobs
with available resources.
As a simplified user concept the use of the word 'queue' can convey a
useful model and also be a method to apply differing defaults to a job
("Submit to the short job queue"). Also, older simpler systems might
have multiple real job queues (like City Hall where you need to get in
the correct line for the service you need).
I have not yet studied (in any detail) suspend thresholds, subordinate
queues and a lot of the other advanced configuration controls.
Is it just me, or do other people have this same confusion? How do
you deal with it? Does it come with more time? American English is
my first language and I have problems with these word usages. For
non-native English speakers these might be harder problems (or maybe
it is easier if these are just new concept words to them).
