Reuti,The problem is now resolved. It was an ACL on the mounted grid engine installation. Had to strace shepherd to see the EPERM errors. By renaming sge_shepherd to sge_shepherd.orig and creating a script called sge_shepherd containing the following line 'strace -ff -o /tmp/shepherd.trace /opt/sge/bin/<arch>/sge_shepherd.orig'.
