IP. Most use SMPP
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Short_message_peer-to-peer_protocol).
Additionally, many operators require some kind of VPN to encrypt the
communication channel.
In the US, if you aren't going to be sending millions of messages, go
to an aggregator instead of directly to the operators. They provide
additional interfaces (some of which are already supported by kannel)
and deal with operator compliance issues for you.
