Dear Wahib,

It would be much more helpful to list your whole config file. I can see no problem with what you show. Have you configured the virtual smsc?

group = smsc
smsc = at
modemtype = W700i
device = /dev/tty??
speed = ?
pin = ????

Since you have already seen your modem in dmesg, you can get the serial port from there. Have you fired minicom? If you did all help is shown on the menus. Go to options and configure it.

BR,
Nikos

thanks Nikos !! but there are still confusions :( ... what do u mean by
drivers ? i am using ubuntu 8.04 and in windows i need to install the pc
suite but what driver i need in linux ? i have installed statserial and
minicom but frankly i am unaware of their uses. Kindly, just guide me with
most basic steps by which i can test the modem.

Secondly, when i try command 'dmesg' it shows that sony ericsson gsm modem
is detected and when i run kannel it just dont detect the modem. The speed
setting continues and it goes on again and again. may be i am using the
wrong detect-string. my modems.conf detail is this ...

group = modems
id = W700i
name = W700i
detect-string = "Sony Ericsson W700"
init-string = "AT+CNMI=2,3,0,1,0;+CMEE=1"
keepalive-cmd = AT+CSQ
reset-string = AT+CFUN=1,0
message-storage = ME
#speed = 115200

plz help !!

Regards,
wahib
