This looks bad. It is complaining that it cannot find "group = core" in the configuration file. Which clearly you do have. Furthermore it shouldn't start if it didn't have a correct core group. Smells like memory corruption... What version gateway are you using?
Could you send an excerpt from the bearerbox (100 or so lines) from its startup?
