FWIW, I have a test system and set up Evolution to use my gmail account and it works fine for me. When you set up your gmail account in evolution did you allow it to automatically set up the settings? The server needs to be "smtp.googlemail.com" using port 465 and you need to check the box for "server requires authentication".
