GOT IT! - In case someone else reads this thread, this is what you need to know.
If your function keys are marked in orange or blue, you need to hold down the Fn key. From the Power menu, select Restart and, with the Fn key firmly down, start tapping F2. (Function keys marked in white shouldn't need this.) I've now got the Live DVD running. If all looks well I'll install the KDE spin.
