Very odd. Usually mastering is a very precision business, with a lot
of attention paid to how you'll cram more audio into a record than it
can manage. I can only imagine that /that/ day someone was just
watching metering and not listening, a cardinal sin in audio
production.
It's probably worth more, now, to a collector because it's wrong. :-\
Well, under normal circumstances one could not hear the hum. I was living
at a university dorm at the time and I had two speaker boxes with 15"
speakers in them borrowed from the theater I was working part-time to
finance my studies. I also got into the habit of listening to rock at the
concert level of volume. That would be a problem in an apartment
somewhere, no so at the dorm. :-) So, under these conditions the hum was
apparent. Unfortunately, I do not have the LP any more.
BTW, I observed a similar phenomena with some older movies played through a
sound system with a good subwoofer. Obviously the production at the time
could not hear such low frequencies. Sometimes it becomes really annoying,
all kinds of low frequency banging and noises, forcing me to turn off the
subwoofer completely.
