Exactly, I guess my point could be summed up by saying that the prevalence of clients similar to mysql means that there is a (learned) expectation to what a basic cli client should be like (i.e an accidental a priori set of ideas), and it would make sense to take advantage of this rather than be different.
I've used mysql client for years - and psql occasionally - but I didn't have much trouble adapting to isql.
Right - isql is definitely nicer to use than sql (provided you have a suitable terminal setup). mysql wins on simplicity tho I think.
However, it seems obvious that I'm shoveling the proverbial uphill on this, as most of you like those clients like they are :-). So err...never mind.
