Do know about mc. Installing it now so I can see the manpage on how to
use it.

Is there a reason you can't download this and extract it using mc (can
do it on an x86 machine):

At least that way you know where it's coming from. :-)

Or you can email me the sudo bin for RSEL6 and I can try and run
it from a mounted usb drive.

Does the cubieboard even use grub? I thought that was still
64-bit UEFI only, and certainly not available on EL6. I suspect
what you need to do is adjust the boot parameter through u-boot.

You could just edit /etc/shadow and remove the password field.
That is on the sata drive. I will have to unplug the sata,
hook it up to a sata/usb adapter to gain access to the shadow
file from another system. Part of the reason I went with the
Cubieboards was the sata interface.
It looks like there is a file in /boot/grub/loader that has
the options entry and at that point it is booting off the sd
card. So I think I can get it into single user mode. Will
be trying this tomorrow.

So what file on the sd card do I edit to add 'single'?
thank you

First discovered no sudo. I always had used su and
never noticed no sudo. Is there someway someone
could send me the bin and I could run it from a usb
drive from my user account?
But since no sudo, I wanted to boot into single user
mode to change root's password. I hook up to the
console serial port and power cycle the server. I
get a selection list of
Centos Options
1: centos
No way to up arrow and press A to append single mode
to that.
How do I get the system to boot into single mode?
thanks
Bob
