The VLC developers seem to be pulling an 'mplayer' here :-/
The part of the problem here is that they've dropped support for true
static builds. I remember the hell I've got through to recompile it for
Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, it took the whole day to download dependencies and fix
obsolete patches etc. so in the end I was really scared to death.
Anyway I am not really sure whether it is possible to do a static build
of glibc... I wonder whether it is possible to link it against a newer
version of glibc and bundle them together.
I don't know exactly what you mean by "dropped support for true static
builds" as we never build statically.
But I just looked closer to why it complained and tried to work around
it, however it seems vlc 1.0.0 needs QT 4.3, and RHEL5 only ships with
QT 4.2.
So I can officially say that vlc 1.0.0 will be out of the picture unless
the videolan project brings down their requirements, or until RHEL6 ships.
(I am still looking at aslightly newer mplayer and ffmpeg build, but
they pull in lots of other stuff with a lot of collateral damage :-/)
Would this "static" build of Slackware help?
