But I just looked closer to why it complained and tried to work around it, however it seems vlc 1.0.0 needs QT 4.3, and RHEL5 only ships with QT 4.2.

So I can officially say that vlc 1.0.0 will be out of the picture unless the videolan project brings down their requirements, or until RHEL6 ships.

A work around till RHEL 6, I got the windows version of Vlc 1.0.0
to run under Wine 1.1.23.

My XFce launcher for Cinemix sound tracks, if anyone is interested.,
The "ding" is to tell me it started (it can take a while):

sh -c "/usr/bin/aplay -q /home/linuxutil/KDE_Notify.wav; cd /home/wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/VideoLAN/VLC; /usr/local/bin/wine ./vlc.exe http://yp.shoutcast.com/sbin/tunein-station.pls?id=975653";
