The core problem is solved now, e.g. I got the cause of the error but
changing to version v2.6 still doesn't give me more output (Exception,
Stacktrace, surefire-report etc.). I think this is a surefire bug and as
soon as I understand the problem I'll file a report with reproduceable

Indeed, it doesn't give much of a clue. However, I noticed that you're using
maven-surefire-plugin v2.3.1. It's old. Try changing to the latest (v2.6) to
see if that does a difference.
