Hmm, I have seen this problem with 1.9 but it has been corrected in m7x. Since you are using the Fedora rpms and have recently updated, I would suggest that you might want to try 1.1.4 from www.openoffice.org and install it. I suspect the Fedora rpms as they are included in OpenOffice.org QA.
What version of OpenOffice.org are you using? (1.0.3, 1.1.4, 1.9.65mr68?)?Ooo 1.1.2-11.5.fc3
(latest available from fc3 repositories - I've just uninstalled and done a fresh install to be sure - didn't help.)
Did you just get OOo or have you been using it a while? Did you recently upgrade your OS or OOo? Do other applications cause similar memory usage?
Used it a fair bit on and off - never noticed this problem before.
What really sends it over the top is when i right click on misspelled words.

Well spotted Nico - there are too many dictionaries running. Partial fix seems to be to locate dictionary.lst. After doing that my mem use settles at 350MB. Here's what my file contained...
