Without Shift, you would end up with A_CBEF or A_CDBF unless you inserted a blank cell between D&E first.
It's the equivalent of OO's Paste Special with cells shifted, but with OO you have to do it thru the Edit > Paste Special > Shift Cells dialogue.
I know of no shortcut key or mouse shortcut to do it in as few keystrokes as Excel.
Unfortunately, Calc 2.0 (m72) does not have this capability either. Darn.
I use SHIFT dragging a lot and this is an important issue for many people. Has anyone submitted a enhancement request before 2.0 comes out? Let's vote on it.
One other nice touch Excel does is that it shows you the position you're dragging the block to it.
