My question is how to change text to numbers - in Excel you can take a column that is designated as text - go to format - click numeric and voila - it is numeric.
I tried this in OO and didn't have any luck - I feel pretty certain that there is a way to do it but haven't as yet come up with it.
If you go to a cell and type '79 it will make it a text field.
Then try to change it to numeric which would take out the apostrophe and allow you to make calculations based on this number.
Does this help?

You do have a vote. If an enhancement isn't already submitted in IssueZilla, submit one. If one is already there, vote for it.
How much more straightforward do you need it to be?
Well...
I did manage to find Issue Tracker (no longer IssueZilla?) and read through about 1000 spreadsheet issues without finding any that matched. (but I may have missed one).
I then tried to submit an issue but found I needed to join OOorg, not just the Forum or Usergroup, so I joined.
Then I tried again but found, quote "To enter an issue, you must first be a project member and know the component you want to report on."
At this point, as a dumb 60-year-old foreign would-be user, not volunteer computer geek, I give up.
I had initially hoped & expected to find an answer to my simple need in "help".
When that failed, I hoped to find an answer via OOoForum.
When that failed, I hoped "users" could help.
To answer your question: I need it to be quite a bit more straightforward.
Nonetheless, I continue to hope & to push my minimal computer skills a bit further every day.
I wish you all well in your admirable effort & would be happy to help, within my very limited capabilities.
