You do not have to download JAVA to use Openoffice. Download the OOo file, and commence the installation. During the installation it will ask if you want to use Java, if you do not have it, select no. There are only a few bits of functionality that require Java and this support can be added post installation. If you do have Java, then it will more than likely find the correct run time environment for you automatically. If you still have questions, start a new thread to this list.
