I have since confirmed that this function is present in excel97. As someone else has pointed out, it is necessary to shift-click on the cell(s) border. It doesn't work by trying to drag a column or row header.Peter Kupfer wrote:

Did you ever say which version of Excel you could shift+drag in. I couldn't do it in Excel 2002.I submitted the issue for another user on the list who found Issue Tracker to be more arcane than the effort to submit was worth. I have only Excel97 and it doesn't have this capability. You aren't the first to say the function doesn't exist in more recent versions than mine.

Fair enough.
Can anyone confirm that Excel actually does this?
Yes, I am "other user" & I confirm that my old original Windows95 issue of Excel version 7.0 did & still does today! (but no mention of it in help function).
Also, every version of Excel I used professionally up to June 2004 (but I don't have the references at hand) did it.
Microsoft must not be very proud of this feature as not a single reference to it can be found in the help files for my copy of excel97.
