Well, I tried such as soon as I read your answer.
I turned on the unprintable characters, had all the para signs plus showing, put the cursor at the preceding para, clicked Format>Default the para went smaller the font size was changed. Then my feeble lonesome mind said, that is not the correct para sign, you need to find the correct sign--- so I went to the next preceding, same thing. I walked up the document about half a page, then the line disappeared. Went back and corrected the font size.

Is that the only way to delete the line? The line can be a handy tool, but after it needs to be deleted.
If you place the cursor as above then right click, the first item in the context menu is Default.
To keep the line from appearing when you type three or more underscores, uncheck Tools->Autocorrect/Autoformat->Options->Apply Border
