Only if you purchase MSO-Pro or Access after the fact. See http://www.microsoft.com/office/editions/howtobuy/compare.mspx#EEAA

Yeah... I specifically said MSO Pro in my first post on this subject, though not in this last one. But that *is* what a lot of people are comparing it to.

So OOo in its basic form still is ahead of MSO in that it does provide
database allbeit dBase from the getgo.

That's true. Although you could argue that the only advantage of a flat-file dBase over a spreadsheet is that the dBase file doesn't have the same record number limitations. Otherwise, they're functionally pretty similar.

With 2.0 we will have HSQLDB
built-in which is a fully functional RDBMS. What more do you want?

Nothing. I'm looking forward to it. It appears to be -- or at least will evolve to be eventually -- a kick-ass alternative to Access. The test for me will be as follows: Can you run the installation routine for OOo (whatever that is depending on platform) and *immediately* create a new relational database without any further set-up. Without knowing ODBC from Obi Wan Kenobi.

Accomplishing the same thing with MySQL through ODBC requires a level of tech competence that I believe is simply beyond a significant fraction of the potential users. Everybody has their own threshold. My threshold is that I can operate, set-up, and configure computer hardware and software, but I can't program worth spit. I find StarBasic to be hopelessly confusing.

I think $449 is a bit steep for MSOpro just to have access as compared
to zero$ and a bit of a learning curve.

I totally agree. I just don't agree that MySQL is necessarily the kind of substitute that a lot of people are looking for. And for many it may be more than "a bit of a learning curve". If you told me that the only way to use the database component of OOo was to learn StarBasic then I'm not sure that I would ever be competent. It would sure as hell be more than a *bit* of a learning curve.
