If you purchased OOo I hope you did not pay more than something like
$5-$10, because you can download it for free from:

The short answer is: ignore the message about Java, continue with the
install and start enjoying OOo. You indicate that you are not an
experienced user, in which case you will be unlikely to need the
additional features Java adds to OOo. When you gain experience and find
you do need these features, you can download the Java JRE from:
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp
