I am not certain I understand. Are you saying that importing fixed width doesn't work in whatever release or OS you have? Please explain because it works very well for me. What I mean is if you select fixed width in the import dialogue and then set the column widths and types is this failing? Perhaps http://tinyurl.com/5u8bt will help.
