I have been using Microsoft Word 2000 to transcribe historical documents for a University archive. To date, about 6000 are 'in the bag'. Today, thinking that OpenOffice.org 1.1.x could be a complimentary word processing programme, I downloaded it and had a look at what it can do. I saw that I could still open my MS Word documents. I chose a trivial one and it opened as an OpenOffice document. I changed it slightly and went to see if the original MS Word document contained the same alteration. I was surprised to find that the MS Word document opened as an OpenOffice text document and that all of my MS Word 2000 documents now open as OpenOffice text documents. I do not know how to revert back to MS Word format.
So, can I change from MS Word format to OpenOffice text format, and back again ? Your advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
The files are still Word documents, don't fret. Your file associations are messed up (to be technical :) ).
