If you're familiar with Shakespeare, you'll know that you can call a rose anything you want, but it's still a rose. If Word is not installed on a pc, Windows refers to files that have '.doc' as an extension as 'Wordpad documents', regardless of what's in the file. If you've saved the file in OOo as a Word97 document, then that's what it is. Windows chooses to call it a wordpad doc, but that doesn't change the content. Associating *.doc files with OOo as you did, doesn't change Window's description of the file type. It will still refer to the files as wordpad documents. The difference is, that if you double-click a doc file, it will run OOo and load the file. There is a way to change the description, but you probably don't want to get into that. Just rest assured that the files are in Word format even if Windows calls them roses.

I did exactly what you said. I even made sure "always open with this program" was checked. Then I went and created a test document in OpenOffice and saved it as always as Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP. I went to my documents and found that it had saved it as a WordPad document. Any other suggestions?
We do not have Microsoft Word on that computer, but it does have WordPad (obviously) and Corel Word Perfect in addition to Open Office.

Word pad doesn't have a format all of its own. What I think is happening is that the extension of .doc has been associated with wordpad.
You need to change this is you want .doc files opened in OOo. Right click on the file with a .doc extension, select 'open with' then select OOo. Ensure that 'always open with this program' is ticked and then select 'ok'... give it a go and reply to the list if it doesn't work.

Hi,
We have a computer at my office that seems to be having a conflict between
OpenOffice and WordPad. Everytime we save a document as Microsoft Office Word 97/2000/XP, it saves the file as a Word Pad document. I have looked all over the computer for some kind of default setting that is causing everything to be saved in WordPad, but I haven't found any solution.
I also have OpenOffice on my computer, and I do not have this issue. I do
have WordPad on my computer, and I did install OpenOffice the same way on my computer as I did the other computer in the office.
Can you help us resolve this?
