It's easier and probably much safer to manually associate files. The
OOo installation instructions that tell you how to do this have already
been pointed to...

When installing OpenOffice.org, it asked you whether you wanted to
associate certain Microsoft Office file types with OpenOffice.org. You
chose to associate it. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the program,
this time making sure to keep the file types unchecked.

Hello Everyone,
I dig open office a lot. I like the general vibrations. However,
When I am using MS Word I save my documents in MS format. Later I
open MS explorer, find the folder I want and then open the file I
saved to do more work on it. When I open the file, however Open
Office seems to have commandeered it, the file opens in Open Office.
I am not yet as deft a user of OO as I am MSW and it is a bit of a pain.
Is there a setting in OpenOffice somewhere that sets it to open all
the files ?
If so I want to change it so that I control what application opens
and displays my files.
Thanks for any help anyone might offer.
Have a peaceful and productive day fellow people.
Charlie,
