I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the page preview to work. It remains blank--barely legible. What do I need to hit to make it work?

It's probable your installation is corrupted as I've never seen a problem with just clicking on the Page Preview icon in any version I've used.
I would start with a *new* download. That's painful if you're on dialup, but dialup makes it more likely that noise got into the download.
