After downloading OpenOffice from www.openoffice.org, you have to double click on the downloaded file, which starts the installation process. After that completes, you should have an OpenOffice folder & icons in your Start menu. Are they there? If so, you can use the icons to start the variou OpenOffice components. After installation, you can also delete that folder, that's on your desktop.

If you're still having problems, please advise, with further information.
