OK, I'll try. "Language" in OOo is an attribute of a character. You can have mixed languages within a document, and the spell checker will AFAIK use the correct dictionary for each language. I just tried this as an example - a document with the words "harbour and harbor" flagged the second as erroneous (I'm using UK English). Selecting "harbor" and doing Format | Character and selecting English (USA) then leaves both words marked as correct. So I suspect perhaps your document text is set to the wrong language. Try changing as above; no doubt the default is settable under the Options menu somewhere (or maybe the import of the rtf messes things up).
