Neither had I.
By experiment, I find that it appears to change the *character*
property (not the character style or paragraph style property) of the
single word being identified. This is ideal, of course, if you have
the odd foreign language term in your document, but - as you imply -
it doesn't change the language of the spelling check being performed
or of other words, paragraphs, or whatever in the document.
