Works just fine for me (linux OOo). Do you have antialiasing turned on?
Tools|Options|OOo...|View|Screen font antialiasing

I suppose it could also depend on the font - where did you get it from?
I used "Free Chancery" and "URW Chancery L" & even sized up to 80 they
look fine.

So I switched to WinXP - I do not have a Chancery font installed so I
couldn't test.
