OK, here's the deal. I figured out what the problem was. So as to help anyone else out on Windows who is having the same problem, here is the solution.

On WinXP go to
My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced tab -> Performance Settings
and select "smooth edge of screen fonts". That turns on antialiasing for Windows and you shouldn't have any more problems with TrueType Fonts.

I didn't even think of this (nor did my brother-in-law who is generally more knowledgeable about Windows then I am) as a possible solution. I just went to that setting on a lark.
