Direct Cursor On/Off
Activates or deactivates the direct cursor. You can specify the
behavior
of the direct cursor by choosing Tools - Options - OpenOffice.org
Writer - Formatting Aids.
This setting sounds so interesting that i decided to try it out.
Unfortunately, there is 'Writer' option here under Options -
OpenOffice.org. How else might i find it? I'm using OOo 3.0 RC 4
for OSX PPC.
Tools; Options; click the + sign at OpenOffice.org Writer to drop
down the list.
Cick/select Formatting Aids, new data shows in right side pane.
Right hand column: Notice 'Direct cursor' heading.
Tick "Direct Cursor"
I have 'Tabs and spaces' ticked right now but your preference may
be different. Experiment, try the Help button if you wish.
Note there is also a "Curor in protected areas" box you can tick.
I have it ticked, you may not want it. Rather than try to explain,
it's better IMO to tell you to read HELP and experiment. Explaining
could take a LOT of words<g>.
Any help there?

I just tried this. If you just open OOo3 with the new desktop icon,
you will find that the Tools menu is very short, and the Options
dialog has fewer sheets than expected. If you open OOo3 Writer you
see a much longer Tools menu and the Options dialog now has
Writer-specific items, including the Formatting Aids sheet.
This seems to be a new feature in OOo3 -- don't clutter up your menus
and dialogs with stuff for applications that are not open. OTOH, we
have to get past the strangeness of the new.

Eli,
No, this is not a "feature" that is peculiar to OOo3, it was in 2.x as
well. I ran into it in OOo 2.4.1 while trying to set the grid spacing
option for a drawing embedded object in a writer document. The drawing
options were not there. I was told this is "Context sensitivity". I
had to open an Impress presentation window, then the draw options were
presented in that window.
