Many people find Thunderbird works well as an email program.  My
employer uses Outlook, but I run Seamonkey on my computer.  Also,
there's no reason why you can't have both Microsoft Office and
OpenOffice on the same computer or just use Outlook etc.  It doesn't
have to be all or nothing.

Incidentally, you're experiencing Microsoft lock in, where they do
everything they can to make it difficult for people to use other products.
