This is so ripe with irony that I scarcely know where to begin.

First of all, I downloaded OO in order to avoid paying MS 100 dollars for their
word processing program. OO 3.0 works well enough for me, though there are a
couple of features that I do miss from Word. But, that's okay.

For the last month, I have received at least 30 or 40 posts from OO users in my
email box -- THIS one -- some of which are interesting, and some of which, are,
... well, I delete a lot of stuff everyday, let's just say. And, it IS EVERY
day.

So, yesterday, there is available an update for OO from 3.0 to 3.0.1. I'm
interested, and I go to the site to read about it, and, ...

... I cannot log in. OO site says, somehow, that my username and password are
invalid. In other words, they have no record of me (apparently) having
registered as a user.

What site did you go to? There's no login at www.openoffice.org.

Did you look at the top right corner of that page? Of course, there is no requirement to log in in order to download OO.o. But – it is easy to understand how someone might think it is.
