Hi Mike,
The first time I met this behaviour make me astonished and I begun to wonder
how it could be too. I'm agree with you about the need of an explanatory
message box or a warning mesage about the "use of an unknow combination of
commands and the results of this action". Either you will like to use them
or not. May be it could be an isue to OOo developers to take care of .My
regards Carlos.

If you notice unexpected formatting changes occurring in your
document, this is the first place to look for the cause.
Some common unwanted or unexpected formatting changes include:
. Horizontal lines. If you type three or more hyphens (---),
underscores (___) or equal signs (===) on a line and then press
Enter, the paragraph is replaced by a horizontal line as wide as
the page. The line is actually the lower border of the preceding
paragraph.
....
To turn autoformatting on or off, go to Format > AutoFormat and
select or delete the items on the sub menu.
I wonder. This sort of change can be useful, but it's /very/ confusing
when first met - there's no obvious way for a beginner to work out say
that that full-width line is the border of the preceding paragraph. And
help's not much help unless you know the magic words, in which case you
probably don't need the help anyway :-)
Might it be useful for OOo to pop up an explanatory message box when at
least some aspects of autocorrect are triggered - a box which users could
disable at their discretion? The message box could at least point to a key
explanatory passage in the help file.

The pop up warnig could even have to labels one to accept the command and
the other to discharge the action
