check if you want to Load or Save MS files with OpenOffice.org If you want to automatically load MS's files into OOo, the check the "L" boxes. If you want to save the files in
MS file formats, check the "S" boxes.

It is as easy as that.

I fear not. You seem to be confusing two ideas here - and, sadly, neither claim is (I believe) correct.

1. Operating system associations cannot be configured from with OpenOffice once it is installed. (That's not surprising, really.) Installation of OpenOffice used to offer to associate some Microsoft Office document file types - at least for Windows. (Installing 3.0.0 did not offer me this option; I'm not sure why. Perhaps it was because other associations already existed. Or just because it detected an earlier installation from the existence of configuration files. But no matter.)

2. You also talk about choosing to save document files in Microsoft Office formats, but this default behaviour is controlled elsewhere - at Tools | Options... | Load/Save | General | Default file format and ODF settings.

No, the options you mention control something different: whether or not Microsoft Office *OLE objects* are converted to and from OpenOffice OLE objects when a Microsoft Office document is opened in OpenOffice or a document is saved from OpenOffice in a Microsoft Office format.
