You will have to save in Word format, by selecting it from the drop down list, when you "Save as" or make Word the default format for saving text files. Also, verify automatic file name extension is selected. You can also install the Sun ODF pluggin, which adds ODF support to Microsoft Office. Microsoft has promised ODF support for Office 2007 in an upcoming service pack.
