Hello, I have been using openoffice.org for some years now, but not on a regular basis. I work primarily with LaTeX. At the same time, I rarely work with MS Office's Word.
Having said that, I have noticed that there have been some troubling articles online in the recent some months. Example: http://www.e-linux.it/news_detail.php?id=7681 (Openoffice.org - The Fun Has Gone?). One of the main problems that appears in these is the rigid bureaucracy in the development of OOo. I find this very troubling. From the looks of it, contributions are fiercely resisted against by the people at Sun and OOo project is not moving as rapidly as it can. And who hasn't heard of requested features and reported bugs that are years old and no action taken! So, I wonder what is the general perception among the users here regarding the future of OOo. I personally would not like the project to stagnate or die, rather I would like it progress with leaps and bounds towards a position where I can comfortably recommend it to fellow MS Word users without having to make lame excuses about lacking features (well, "most users do not use 90% of Word's features" doesn't really cut it when one is recommending a relatively obscure product). I read a recent comment in slashdot by someone who said that if OOo being a free product cannot impress people while MS Office worth $500 is holding on to the market tells a lot about OOo! Comments are welcome. ->HS -- Please reply to this list only. I read this list on its corresponding newsgroup on gmane.org.
