In any case, the poster on Slashdot compared OOo with Firefox. Both are

That comparison seems apples vs. oranges to me.

Yes, one might see it that way. But I think the poster was trying to
make a point about free software and the features and quality it offers.

FF and OOo are both free. But compared to their "dominant competitors",
FF offered much more features that were in demand and at a much better
quality. Result: FF is eating away at IE's market share at a high pace.

OOo on the other hand seems to suffer from limited set of features the
most. I think it is a high quality product however. To be fair though,
OOo has most of the features necessary for non-complex document
preparations (as opposed to preparing technical manuscripts).

Actually, considering these three arguments, I think Ubuntu has also
progressed tremendously. It is open source and free, has features which
were in demand for ages in Linux world (GUI friendly OS) and is a high
quality product.

I hear the argument al the time about Office doing more than OO and yet, how many people EVERY use those features.

I have installed Ubuntu on hundreds of desktops for businesses and none have ever come back and said, OO just doesnt have what we need.

Now, I have had one very nice comment that - OO has just what we need and more than we'll use and, ITS FREE!

If you re looking for something with special features then you are going to pay for it. OO, Firefox, Ubuntu - work just fine for the majority of the population - though they dont know it.

But, to each their own :D
