Can an alternative style sheet be used temporarily, that may have
different background colours for the different styles? I don't mind
writing it myself, if it's a one-time doing. But how to switch on the
fly?

Why not? I'm already familiar with HTML and the markup was only a
small portion of the text. Furthermore, I didn't touch the mouse the
whole time! I am actually considering adopting this method for
documents that I must create, and I found a great HTML to PDF
converter as I prefer to present documents in PDF.
