You only have to have Adobe's PDF Reader (acroread) to run in the
background without even a PDF file loaded to slow things down.
Are you speaking of Acrobat Reader 9.0.0? Why do you refer to it as
"acroread?"
What OS are you using? Do you suppose that matters?
