We had such problems with Adobe's PDF acroread, which seemed to cause

(to not come into the temptation to start it) the problems dissapeared.
You only have to have Adobe's PDF Reader (acroread) to run in the
background without even a PDF file loaded to slow things down.
I use Realplayer 10 on x86_64 without problems. Helix and Realplayer 11
caused the problems you described.

I'm assuming you're using Linux, because I get the same issue with Acrobat Reader on Ubuntu 8.10. It chews up CPU cycles at an alarming rate and brings everything to a standstill. Thankfully there are other options.
