For me, for example, MS Office can't be an alternative to OpenOffice.org. Some things I failed to do in MS Office, I easily did in OpenOffice.org and I need my OpenOffice.org BASIC macros for most of my tasks and I want to be a part of the community, an I think it's an appreciated bonus that it won't cost me any money, which means that I can upgrade when there is a new version around without worrying about the cost. But not everyone is like me. For some people it is the other way around.
