Now here is something of interest... I tried the same (open .odt save as .doc) in OOo 2.4.2 and have no issues. So, this is definitely a 3.x bug. Pedro, if you've not filed a bug for this (I know that you've been working on this doc for some time w/other issues), please do so now as it should be included as a 'showstopper' bug for version 3.1 if it isn't already.
