As SP pointed out, yes you can - I've done this several times. Whether
it will fix the issue is probably another story...

1. Backup your important documents and ~/.openoffice... folders!
2. System|Administration|Synaptic...|search for 'openoffice' and mark
any listed as 3.0.1-x for 'Complete Removal', then click the 'Apply' button.
3. Click Settings|Repositories|Third-Party Software|and uncheck the
ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice repositories. Click 'Close'.
4. Click the 'Reload' button to update your repositories.
5. Now search again for openoffice but instead use openoffice.org & mark
for install, as a minimum: openoffice.org, openoffice.org-common,
openoffice.org-evolution (don't as why, just do it),
openoffice.org-gnome. That will install the bulk & then you can go back
and install any additional help, language, spell, etc., that you need.
